So it's Sunday night. It's the night before going back to school or going back to work. The evening is drawing on, and the light is getting dim. There are just a few hours before sleep. What are you going to do with them?
The Sunday Night project - sunset
Sunday night films on the TV were generally films of the older kind, films you might watch alone. Films where you were the only one.
The Sunday Night project - sunset
There might be a scene where they went down to the beach, filmed on a Wednesday, or on any other day of the week, but because of when you were watching, the beach became a Sunday Night beach. The Sunday night beach to visit before sleep...

In my new book, “Lowell's”, I feel as if I am creating a detective novel from first principles. I wrote some scenes with the idea that I would tie all this material together and work it up into a detective book. My plotting is not good. The book needs more story, but there is some nice stuff in there.
So, my plan is now to write a second “Lowell's” using the settings and characters from what I've established so far. I may write this as a series of short stories longhand, and then type them up.

One of the most important things that has ever happened to me as a cartoonist has been the support of Seth, who edited and designed my “New World” book. It has been wonderful. Seth can probably not imagine how grateful to I am to him.

I was as pleased as punch in 2005 when Marc Baines of Glasgow's Kingly Books decided to reprint some of my Mauretania Comics stories in a smart new paperback. It was a really great thing and we had the launch at the Mono bar. The bar still exists although the great Kingly Books has gone! https://www.monocafebar.com/
The contents of Marc's “Dial” do not all appear in Seth's “New World” collection of my stories, although the first “The Dial” does.
The Dial and Other stories opened my eyes into how stories could be presented in print.

These comics are blessed by a spirit of irresponsibility. They are comics that will just take off and zoom down the straights with no thought of the dangerous bends ahead. Their readability or content may not be enhanced, their translation may be poor, and their subject matter … dumb ...but they do possess a certain... freedom.
The Italian version of Inspector Rockwell, despised, his office desk dumped unceremoniously in the road outside police headquarters... Rockwell will still solve the case!
Photo stories, stories that contain nothing, or stories that will make you squirm. Familiar characters Moon Queen and Prince Umsween adventure to regions far beyond their normal continuity. What is this? What are you trying to pull? Make you angry? Make you … cheated? Are there any videos? We've got aliens, of course!
Look out for the logo. Look out for Targafloriocomics wherever fast, zooming, irresponsible brain-dead Futurist comics are sold. Tragafloriocomics!
(Where does the name come from? The Targaflorio was a sports car race around the island of Sicily – like the Isle of Man TT motorbike races, but slightly more Dangerous!)
Experimental or just “...mental”?

I wanted to include another story in this book and so I included the single-page “Earth Fault,” with my character, Monitor. It's one of the stories where he is a child and was inspired by my visit to an enormous air base and by looking at some of the wartime air-base-style houses. The road to the enormous air base was little more than a lane and, even at that, appeared little used. It was as if all the business of the air base concerned only the sky and the people there had little use for the land at all.
“Earth Fault” features as its final panel, the appearance of a dazzling sunset that is seen to flow through the house. The book is black and white. I gave it some thought. So the panel with the sunset is repeated on the colour back cover.
An official-looking reference to being “Approved by the Agricultural Standards Institute” appears on the book's title page, accompanied by the silhouette of a cow. There is no such body. It is purely imaginary.

The book is inspired by the kind of children's “annual” which used to be commonplace as a Christmas gift. OK, I have subverted the idea, but I do rather like those old things. I used to have a lot of them. The stories were always told straightforwardly but they were often mysteriously nostalgic, because most of the old annuals I had were second-hand.
I remember sitting in the quiet bedroom at my grandparents' house, the evening sun slanting in through the window. The title pages of these books had inscriptions about old children from years before; “This book belongs to …” and then the name. The unknown “M. Rodgers” or “To Josh. A present from Mrs Dickinson...” and this might be a second inscription; The book had been second-hand even then!
